Tim - Algeria Tour
The trip was just the length I wanted, as was the balance of the itinerary. You had fully understood what I had in mind.
The hotels were good, especially the Lamasour in Algiers, which is new and stylish and has great views over the city.
My guides (Ganu in Algiers and Abla in Constantine) were excellent. Highly efficient without being bossy and very concerned that I got what I wanted out of the trip. Abla is, I gathered, the local agency manager who was a last minute substitute as Saif was sick. This had the benefit that I could wander around Timgad alone, which is what I wanted. In Djemila I had a site guide. He was good but I felt a bit rushed through. It is the most atmospheric place where it would have been good to linger. I should probably have taken a harder line. Ganu is outstanding. Full of information, humorous, guiding with a light touch. We talked about quite a range of things over three days. I feel I know a lot about Algeria generally.
The ancient highlights for me were Djemila, Timgad, Tipaza and the museum at Cherchell. Lambaesis a disappointment. The newer highlights were the Kasbah, the Bardo and the Bey’s Palace in Constantine. Museum des Beaux Arts was not very interesting. I also appreciated being able to visit a mosque, really for the first time.
