Classic Algeria Tour

Welcome to the historic city of Algiers! After meeting your guide you will transfer to your hotel. If you have an early arrival, you’ll take a downtown walking tour, including the Grande Poste, the port, and historic mosques. If you have time, head up to the picturesque view from the Basilica Notre Dame d’Afrique.  For those with early morning arrivals, you may want to spend the afternoon on a tour through the historic UNESCO World Heritage Kasbah.

After breakfast, you will depart for Cherchell, which was once the capital of the Numidian kingdoms. Take a guided tour of the museum before traveling to your next destination, the UNESCO World Heritage Roman site of Tipaza. Tipaza is arguably one of the most picturesque Roman cities in North Africa. Stroll down the ancient Roman road next to the clear Mediterranean Sea and get a glimpse of what it would have been like to live in this Roman settlement. Here you will visit the museum and the archeological site, which includes the largest basilica in North Africa

When you are ready you will travel back to Algiers. On the way, you will explore the pyramid-like structure of the Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania (Tomb of the Christian).

Take a late afternoon or evening flight to Annaba. Meet your driver in Annaba and transfer to the hotel.

The historic city of Annaba is located in eastern Algeria along the Mediterranean Sea. This coastal city was once a strategic location for the Phoenicians and Romans. Start the day with a visit to the site of Hippo Regius and the Cathedral of St. Augustine.  The museum at Hippo Regius hosts large mosaics found in the region. Be sure to visit the ruins of the ‘Basilica of Peace’ where St. Augustine was bishop in the later 4^th and early 5^thcenturies. The Cathedral of St. Augustine was built between 1881 and 1900 and the many stained glass windows tell the story of the early Church Father, St. Augustine.

When you are ready, continue to Constantine for the night.

After breakfast, travel to the hillside Roman site of Tiddis, which offers excellent views over the surrounding region. You will begin by walking through a triumphal arch along the Roman road. Follow the path to visit the sanctuary of Mithras, the Christian basilica, Roman homes, water tanks, and a small forum.

Return to Constantine in the afternoon for a city tour. Located above the Rhumel Gorge, Constantine has a view that is sure to impress. Some of the sites you may visit include the Museum of Cirta, the suspension bridges, the Kasbah, and the Palace of Ahmed Bey.

You will want to get an early start today to travel south to the unforgettable historical and archaeological sites of Timgad and Lambaesis. Before you reach Timgad, stop at Medracen (Ancient Numidian Tomb), which is 58 meters in diameter and 19 meters tall.

Continue to Timgad and explore this impressive site and museum. Here you will discover the library, temples, amphitheatre, and the arch of Trajan.

Your group may want to have lunch and then travel to Lambaesis to see the large structure of the legionary base. Return back to Timgad for your night in Hotel Trajan.

Roman ruins in Djemila

Today you will want an early start to travel north to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Djemila, meaning ‘Beautiful’ in Arabic. The site lives up to its name as it is uniquely situated amongst rolling hills. You will have a guided visit to both the museum and the historic site. Explore the forum, basilicas, baptisteries, arch of Caracalla, Temple des Septimes, well-preserved Roman market, and theatre.

Your next stop will be the city of Setif where you will take a guided tour through the Museum of Archaeology and see the grand mosaic called ‘The Triumph of Dionysos’.

Algiers' Botanical Garden

Today you will return to Algiers in the morning. If you haven’t visited the Kasbah already, you will start here with a tour through this historic medina. If you have time, you may also visit some local museums such as the Bardo Museum, and the Museum of Archaeology and Islamic Art. Each of which are well worth a visit!

If you have time before your flight, you may take additional guided city visits which may include the Monument to the Martyr, the beautiful Botanical Garden of Algiers, or any other renowned city sites you’ve missed.

Finally, your guide will take you to the airport for your departure flight.
