Day 1: Algiers

Arrive in Algiers and transfer to your hotel for two nights. Depending on your arrival time you can take a walking and driving afternoon tour of the Notre Dame d'Afrique, Grand Poste, downtown Algiers, Monument to the Martyrs, and Bastion 23. Dinner will be taken at your hotel.

Day 2: Algiers / Tipasa / Cherchell / Algiers

Today will begin your Roman site visits with an excursion to the gorgeous seaside site of Tipasa. At the UNESCO World Heritage site of Tipaza you will not want to miss the historic basilica, which is said to be the largest in North Africa. Enjoy fresh fish lunch in Tipaza and travel to Cherchell to visit two museums that host a number of Roman antiquities. On your way back to Algiers you will stop at the pyramid-like structure of the Tomb de le Christian. (royal mausoleum of Mauritania). Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 3 Algiers / Djemila / Setif

After breakfast you will take an early morning departure and travel to Setif passing through beautiful rolling hills and picturesque towns. You will travel directly to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Djemila. Here you will see numerous basilicas, baptisteries, amphitheatre, Roman market, forum, and triumphal arch. You will have a guided visit of both the museum and historic site. If there is time remaining in the day you will return to Setif and visit the National Museum of Archaeology which hosts the remarkable and intact mosaic Procession of Bacchus. Option for traditional Algerian music and cuisine.

Day 4: Setif / Tiddis / Constantine

After breakfast you will travel to the hillside site of Tiddis and take a guided tour of the: Roman homes built into the rocks, triumphal arch, and basilicas. You will return to Constantine for lunch and a visit to the museum of Cirta. and palace of Ahmed Bey. Before supper your group may be interested in a stroll to one of of the city's famous suspension bridges and see the grand Rhumel Gorge. Dinner will be at your hotel.

Day 5: Constantine / Timgad / Batna

Today you will begin the day with a drive to the ancient Tomb of the Numidian Kings, Medracen. This incredible tomb-like structure is 58 meters in diameter and 19 meters tall and is dated back to the 4th century BC. Then continue your travels to the UNESCO World heritage site of Timgad. This large site gives you the true feel of a Roman town and way of life. Here you will discover the library, temples, amphitheater, and arch of Trajan. The site also has a museum with mosaics and other antiquities. After this your group may want to have lunch and then travel to Lambaesis to see the large structure of the legionary base. Hotel Salim will be your place to rest this night.

Day 6: Batna / Tebessa

After breakfast you will travel to the Roman bathhouse in Khenchela that is said to be 2,000 years old. Continue on to Tebessa, which was said to be the largest city in Algeria in 75AD. Upon arrival in Tebessa you will visit the basilica of St. Crispina, Arch of Caracalla, Temple of Minerva, and a museum that is recently opened to the public, hosting many Christian artifacts and mosaics (museum not always open to the public). Dinner and night in Tebessa.

Day 7: Tebessa / Madaurouch / Souk Aharas / Khemissa / Guelma

In the morning you will travel to Madaurouch, a site worth seeing but often left unvisited. Here St. Augustine studied and you can find Roman baths, theatre, fortress, and basilicas. After exploring the site you will travel to Souk Aharas, the birthplace of St. Augustine in 354 AD. Here you will see a small museum and a collection of monuments pertaining to St. Augustine's life. Continue on to your next stop at Khemissa, founded in the second century AD, and is built on the side of a mountain. You can explore the large Roman theatre and the forum, basilica, and baths. The site is an excellent place for a picnic lunch. Your next stop will be Guelma where you will visit the well-preserved Roman theatre and two adjoining museums. Take a short excursion to the beautiful Hammam Meskoutine where the natural water temperature reaches 95 degrees Celsius. Return to Guelma for dinner and night.

Day 8: Guelma / Annaba

After breakfast travel to Annaba and then spend the morning visiting the site of Hippone, the museum, and the Cathedral of St. Augustine. Make sure you explore the ruins of the 'Basilica of Peace' where Augustine was bishop from 396-430 AD. You will take lunch in Annaba at a restaurant along the coast. In the afternoon, time permitting, visit Cap De Garde, historic mosques, downtown Annaba and then return to your hotel. Dinner will be taken at the hotel.

Day 9: Annaba / Algiers

In the morning you will take a return flight to Algiers and upon arrival you will continue city and museum visits. Some of the places you will explore are the museum of anitquities and Islamic arts, the Bardo museum, Sacre Coeur, National Musuem of Fine Arts, and the Museum of the Armed Forces.

Day 10: Algiers / Depart

Today your driver will take you to the airport thus ending your Classic Roman Algeria tour
