Classic Algeria Group Tour Itinerary

8 Days / 7 Nights, October 9–16, 2027

This group tour covers the sites that make Algeria one of the least-visited, best-preserved destinations in the Mediterranean. Guided throughout by our Algeria-based team, this fixed-date tour runs from October 9 to 16, 2027.

ARRIVE IN ALGIERS

Welcome to the historic city of Algiers. You will be welcomed by a driver and transferred directly to your hotel.

At 2 pm, meet in the hotel lobby to begin the Downtown orientation tour of Grand Poste, Historic Mosques, Port and the Monument of the Martyrs.   If time remains you will visit Basilica of Notre Dame D’Afrique.

Dinner as a group in a local resturant. (Not Included).

ALGIERS – TIPAZA – CHERCHELL – TOMB OF THE CHRISTIAN – ANNABA

After breakfast, you will depart for Cherchell, which was once the capital of the Numidian kingdoms. Take a guided tour of the museum before traveling to your next destination, the UNESCO World Heritage Roman site of Tipaza. Tipaza is arguably one of the most picturesque Roman cities in North Africa. Stroll down the ancient Roman road next to the clear Mediterranean Sea and get a glimpse of what it would have been like to live in this Roman settlement. Here you will visit the museum and the archeological site, which includes the largest basilica in North Africa

When you are ready you will travel back to Algiers. On the way, you will explore the pyramid-like structure of the Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania (Tomb of the Christian).

Take a late afternoon or evening flight to Annaba. Meet your driver in Annaba and transfer to the hotel.

ANNABA – CONSTANTINE

The historic city of Annaba is located in eastern Algeria along the Mediterranean Sea. This coastal city was once a strategic location for the Phoenicians and Romans. Begin your day with a visit to the site of Hippo Regius and the Cathedral of St. Augustine. The museum at Hippo Regius houses large mosaics found in the region. Be sure to visit the ruins of the Basilica of Peace, where St. Augustine was bishop in the latter 4th and early 5th centuries. The Cathedral of St. Augustine was constructed between 1881 and 1900, and its many stained glass windows depict the life of the early Church Father, St. Augustine.

When you are ready, travel to Constantine for the night.

CONSTANTINE – TIDDIS – CONSTANTINE

After breakfast, travel to the hillside Roman site of Tiddis, which offers excellent views over the surrounding region. You will begin by walking through a triumphal arch along the Roman road. Follow the path to visit the sanctuary of Mithras, the Christian basilica, Roman homes, water tanks, and a small forum.

Return to Constantine in the afternoon for a city tour. Located above the Rhumel Gorge, Constantine has a view that is sure to impress. Some of the sites you may visit include the Museum of Cirta, the suspension bridges, the Kasbah, and the Palace of Ahmed Bey.

CONSTANTINE – TIMGAD – LAMBAESIS – BATNA

Today will be an early start to travel south to the unforgettable historical and archaeological sites of Timgad and Lambaesis. Before you reach Timgad, stop at Medracen (Ancient Numidian Tomb), which is 58 meters in diameter and 19 meters in height.

Continue to Timgad and explore this impressive site and museum. Here you will discover the library, temples, amphitheatre, and the arch of Trajan.

You may want to have lunch and then travel to Lambaesis to see the large structure of the legionary base. Return to Timgad for your night in Hotel Trajan.

BATNA – DJEMILA – SETIF

Today you will want an early start to travel north to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Djemila, meaning ‘Beautiful’ in Arabic. The site lives up to its name as it is uniquely situated amongst rolling hills. You will have a guided visit to both the museum and the historic site. Explore the forum, basilicas, baptisteries, arch of Caracalla, Temple des Septimes, well-preserved Roman market, and theatre.

Your next stop will be the city of Setif where you will take a guided tour through the Museum of Archaeology and see the grand mosaic called ‘The Triumph of Dionysos’.

SETIF – ALGIERS

After an early breakfast, you will depart for Algiers at 8 am. Upon arrival in Algiers you will enjoy a visit of the Kasbah, you will start here with a tour through this historic medina and visit other locations in Algiers.

Dinner as a group in a local resturant. (Not Included).

DEPARTURE

At the appropriate time you will head to the airport for your departure flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a private tour or a group tour?

This is one of our small-group, fixed-date departures, running October 9–16, 2027. It’s a different format from our usual private tours, where you set your own dates and itinerary, but it’s staffed and guided the same way, with the same local team on the ground in Algeria.

How large is the group?

This departure runs with a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 15 travellers.

What is included in the tour?

Your tour includes private transportation and a private driver, a licensed English-speaking guide throughout, plus local site guides in Annaba, Timgad and Djemila. Domestic flights, accommodations, breakfasts, and all entrance fees per the itinerary are also included.

What is not included in the tour?

International airfare, travel insurance, and your Algeria visa cost are not included. Lunches, dinners, and beverages are also not included, along with personal spending, optional quad or camel excursions, and tips.

Is there a single supplement for solo travellers?

Yes, a single supplement applies for solo travellers. If you’d prefer to avoid the extra cost, we can pair you with another solo traveller of the same gender, provided both of you consent to sharing a room.

How physically demanding is this tour?

The tour involves a good amount of walking on uneven ground at archaeological sites (Tipaza, Timgad, Djemila, Tiddis), plus several days of driving between cities. If you have any mobility concerns, we encourage you to reach out to our Travel Experts beforehand to discuss your needs and whether this itinerary is a good fit for you.

Do I need a visa to visit Algeria?

It depends on your passport. Most of our travellers, including passport holders from the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia, will need a tourist visa. Once your tour deposit is confirmed, Mosaic North Africa’s Algeria travel partner prepares a Letter of Invitation, which you’ll need for your visa application. Most consulates won’t accept an application more than 60 days before your tour starts, or less than 15 days before, so we recommend starting the process 2-3 months ahead of departure. Read our full visa guide →

Is Algeria safe to travel to?

Yes, when travelling with a professional local operator. Major cities and tourist sites, including Algiers, Constantine, Tipaza, Timgad and Djemila, are considered safe for visitors, and current government travel advisories from Canada, the US and the UK support organised tourism with standard precautions. Government-assigned guards or police escorts may accompany you in certain regions along the route; this doesn’t indicate any imminent threat, and past travellers have enjoyed a warm welcome from local police and communities. Do I need to book my own flights?

You’re responsible for booking your own international flight, arriving in Algiers on October 9, 2027 and departing from Algiers on October 16, 2027. The domestic flight from Algiers to Annaba on Day 2 is included as part of the tour.
